Ear Hustle is made inside California prisons and outside them, co-founded by Earlonne Woods and Nigel Poor, with Rahsaan Thomas and others in the chairs as the show grew.
Stories come from incarcerated people and from life after release: a pet, a recipe, a parole hearing, a friendship that has rules the outside does not understand.
It changed what prison audio could be by refusing both the lecture and the shock. The producers are in the population or were, and the jokes are allowed to be ordinary.
Start with a small-subject episode before a heavy one. The show’s ear for daily life is the part that does not travel in clips.
