Serial, from Sarah Koenig and Serial Productions, is the show that taught a mass audience to wait a week for the next chapter of a reported story.

Season one was Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee. Later seasons and sibling series moved through the military, Cleveland, and other institutions. The method is the same: a reporter who lets you hear her change her mind.

Koenig’s narration is the instrument. She is present, doubtful, and specific about what the documents say. The cultural aftershock was enormous. The episodes themselves are still a reporting project, not a brand extension.
