Your Own Backyard is Chris Lambert’s investigation of the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart in San Luis Obispo, reported from the county where it happened.
Lambert interviews classmates, follows the sheriff’s record, and keeps the community’s rumors separate from what anyone can prove. The series is patient to the point of being local.
The show is narrative true crime by a person who did not start as a national host. That proximity is the reason it mattered. Tips and pressure around the case moved after people heard the episodes.
Start at the first episode even if you know the later legal outcome. The early interviews explain why the case sat still for so long.
